BEGINNING
HAKA Sewing Furniture started out in a rustic workshop beside a pear orchard in Fruitland, Ontario (near Hamilton) in 1989 producing what is now their #400A 1-drawer Full Size Folding Cutting Table. For this new venture, co-founders Lauri Saarinen and Pamela Burgin drew on Lauri’s expertise in custom cabinetry and Pamela’s background in graphic design, sewing and custom quilt making. Lauri and Pamela wanted a name for their new company that reflected their common Finnish heritage and as Lauri had fond childhood memories of Hakaniemi, an historic district in Helsinki (the Finnish capital), they chose a portion of that place name and "HAKA" was born.

FINNISH FUNCTIONALITY
In the following years, Lauri and Pamela designed a comprehensive suite of sewing and craft furniture which they continue to develop today... always original, ever innovative. HAKA’s Scandinavian "form follows function" design reflects their Finnish roots with its beautiful, uncompromising functionality.

INSPIRATION
HAKA Sewing Furniture represents a blend of two design philosophies: "user centered design" - focused on how the customer wants or needs to work plus "use centered design"- focused on the customer's goals and tasks. At HAKA, customer needs are paramount and have often inspired the development of new products.

UNIQUE CUSTOMIZING OPTIONS
It is logical that Lauri’s custom cabinetry mind set would lead to HAKA Sewing Furniture's unique customizing options such as sewing and cutting furniture height choices, door/hinge choices, personalized handle options and numerous colour choices. In fact, every HAKA order is made-to-order and custom orders are HAKA's specialty.

Haka’s reputation for superior quality is built on the partners' strong work ethic, teamwork and "old world" craftsman-like attention to detail.

PERSONAL TOUCH
HAKA may have grown in size and reputation since 1989, but it has retained its sincere one-on-one personal touch. Recently relocated to a new, larger workshop with a spacious showroom in bustling Mississauga at the western end of Toronto (the provincial capital of Ontario), Lauri and Pamela look forward to the opportunity of working with you to enhance your sewing experience, with HAKA Sewing Furniture... sew much better!
